Tips to Win Grant Funding for High Performance Computing

Tips to Win Grant Funding for High Performance Computing

HPC is a powerful tool for historically black collage and universities (HBCUs) and minority-serving institutions (MSIs) to provide many competitive advantages. Offering leading technology as a differentiator to support faculty members in their unique research projects helps to recruit and retain top tier talent. The research they conduct often requires the collection and processing of massive amounts of data to simulate complex systems. HPC can speed workloads and improve time to results, and when combined with the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics, it expedites the pace of discovery.

Another advantage of HPC is that it can be integrated into the curriculum and serve as a way for students to get hands-on experience. There is a shortage of technical talent that Gartner reports is the biggest barrier for companies to adopt emerging technologies. HPC clusters are a training ground for students, which gives them an edge when transitioning to the workforce.

Tips to Increase the Chance of Success

Dell Technologies has partnered with hundreds of colleges and universities to help them have strong grant proposals that follow best practices to increase the likelihood of funding. Some factors for a successful grant application include:

  • Know the funding source: Align the proposal to the needs and requirements of what is important to the source, to help meet the objectives of the grant foundation.
  • Understand unique technology requirements: Dell Technologies works with applicants to understand what technology can best support the grant proposal in the given timeline. Using a long history of grant funding experiences gives Dell Technologies unique insights into details which can make or break a proposal. For example, with some programs, scoping newer, more cutting-edge technologies may help a proposal succeed, whereas with other programs, it could be denied.
  • Engage early: Engage with specialists from Dell Technologies early in the process to increase chances of success. These specialists include solution architects, PhD subject matter experts, educational strategists and consultants from the Dell Technologies Grants Support Program. The Grants Program is a free service that provides customized consultations for initial grant development. To further support this program, Dell Technologies partners with the Grants Office, a national grant services firm that assists with technology funding projects.

Available Grants for HBCUs and MSIs

Many research projects facilitated by HPC are made possible through grant funding programs. These programs are competitive, but the good news for HBCUs and MSIs is that there are grants that are specifically designed to support their institutions. Below are examples of available grants:

  • Department of Defense (DoD) HBCU and MSI Programs: Collection of programs to develop research capabilities that are relevant to the DoD.
  • Centers of Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) and HBCU Research Infrastructure for Science and Engineering (HBCU-RISE): Program to support research themes in an area related to the National Science Foundation (NSF).
  • HBCU Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP): Program to strengthen STEM undergraduate research and education at HBCUs.
  • Field specific grants: Other grant opportunities for HBCUs and MSIs that are focused on building research instrumentation capabilities for high demand research areas, such as biology and computer science.

Dell Technologies and AMD for High Performance Computing

With the right HPC, HBCUs and MSIs can accelerate research discoveries, recruit and retain top talent, and prepare students for technical careers. Together, Dell PowerEdge servers with AMD EPYC™ processors provide unmatched performance for data driven-research, an overall lower cost, advanced security for collaborative environments, and simplified management. Dell Technologies and AMD have jointly engineered Validated Designs for HPC to easily match to your technology requirements.
